    Job Summary:

    The primary responsibility of the Relief Shift Mechanic is to safely maintain, repair, troubleshoot coil tube boilers and improve plant equipment. The Relief Shift Mechanic is responsible for the preventive maintenance of equipment, repair and/or replacement of equipment as well as the installation of new systems within the facility. The Shift Mechanic is a multi-skilled, multi-craft discipline. This position involves 12-hour rotating shifts.

    Relief Shift Mechanic Responsibilities

    • Primary person responsible for providing 12 hour shift coverage for absence of Shift Mechanics (NOTE: will normally work 8.5 hours per day (30 minute unpaid lunch) Monday to Friday, except when providing 12 hour shift coverage.
    • Shift Mechanic duties while providing coverage
    • Responsible for breakdown response while covering for Shift Mechanics.
    • Assume shift Mechanic role for Emergency Response (while covering shift relief)
    • Daily Monday-Friday responsibility will mainly focus on PM task completion
    • GMIS/GMIM inspection lead
    • Will be responsible for completing tasks listed on the Shift Mechanic Training checklist plus:
      • Assisting with large, two –or-more person maintenance jobs.
      • Other tasks as assigned.

    Shift Mechanic Responsibilities

    • Able to work a 12-hour rotating shifts, including weekends.
    • Able to work overtime, as required.
    • Able to wear a full face respirator, self-contained breathing apparatus and other personal protective equipment.
    • Able to work in confined spaces.
    • Able to lift up to 55 lbs.
    • Able to work independently for extended periods of time.
    • Able to climb stairs and ladders.
    • Able to work at elevations.
    • Able to work outdoors in weather extremes (e.g. heat, cold)
    • Able to work in a team environment.
    • Able to multi-task.
    • Good computer skills – experience with SAP and Microsoft Excel an asset.
    • Good organizational skills.
    • Good communication skills.
    • Able to drive a forklift.
    • Able to work in standing or crouched positions for prolonged periods of time
    • Able to perform sustained manual activities at moderate levels of exertion.
    • May use hand tools and operate fixed and mobile plant equipment.
    • Other tasks as assigned.


    • Grade 12 diploma
    • 2 years’ experience in boiler room environment
    • 2 years’ experience in a maintenance environment in a manufacturing facility


    • 4th class Operating Engineering Certificate
    • 3rd class Operating Engineering Certificate (preferred)


    • Good mechanical ability
    • Ability to work shift with limited notice
    • Ability to lift 55 lbs
    • Ability to wear a full face respirator/SCBA


    • Requires daily contact with employees in other departments.
    • Requires regular contact with external contractors and vendors.


    • May work in seated or standing positions for prolonged periods of time, performs sustained manual activities at low to moderate levels of exertion.
    • Works and travels throughout the plant environments of varied temperatures and humidity
    • Climbs ladders and stairs and works on elevated platforms.
    • May be required to provide off-shift technical support to maintenance and utilities employees.
    • Ability to lift 55 lbs
    • Wear a full face respirator/SCBA (clean shaven)
