    Reports To:        Manager/Senior Manager, Residential Mortgage Underwriting



    Purpose of Job

     

    Mortgage underwriters are responsible for negotiating, recommending, rejecting, and in some cases, approving mortgage applications within established guidelines for new or existing real estate guarantees. This must be done as efficiently as possible, while making reasonable loan judgments without affecting service and profitability.

     

    Main Activities:

     

    • Review the mortgage application and supporting documents, negotiate terms with the mortgage broker, reject the application, recommend the application for approval, and in some cases, approve the application.
    • Ensure that approved transactions end as effectively as possible by tracking unfinished conditions/documents and ensuring compliance with established guidelines. (50%)
    • Daily follow-up brokers issue mortgage commitments to ensure effective closing of mortgage documents. (20%)
    • Provides the highest level of internal and external customer service every day, while providing advice and maintaining broker relationships for mortgage brokers. (20%)
    • Provide mortgage specialists, clients and colleagues with underwriting expertise every day and maintain an up-to-date understanding of company policies, procedures and products. (10%)

    • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills with the ability to respond in a clear, concise and professional manner
    • Displays pride in providing superb customer service
    • 2+ years’ mortgage experience in the alternative mortgage market
    • Proficiency in MS Office (mainly MS Word and Excel)
    • Completion of a post-secondary degree preferably in a financial field
    • Knowledge of fraud risk in the mortgage industry and the ability to address concerns relating to suspected misrepresentation is required
